ILLEGAL FOREIGN SHOP OPERATORS CHARGED

By Immigration and Citizenship Authority, 7 September 2021

The MSME Council commends the Immigration and Citizenship authority on these spot checks on illegal foreign retailers in Kimbe that unfairly compete with local MSMEs. We ask the ICA to do this nationwide. We also ask IPA to investigate if these companies are in breach of their foreign enterprise registration permits and penalise them accordingly. Below is a report they published:

An Immigration led spot check operations in Kimbe, West New Britain Province today has resulted in the apprehension of over 20 foreign nationals identified with discrepancies in the entry permits.

The random spot checks targeting foreign owned retail and wholesale businesses were carried out with the support from the PNG Customs and Police.

Chief Migration Officer Mr Stanis Hulahau said some retail and wholesale businesses are non-compliant and it is fair that spot check operations are fairly conducted in all the provinces to ensure compliance of the Migration laws.

The operations in Kimbe starts from Morokea to Hoskins with the apprehension of 2O foreign nationals operating in 14 different locations.

Eleven (11) of them were penalised under the Migration Act for discrepancies and breach of their visa conditions. They were fined K5,000 and one on K10,000. A total of K60, 000 Migration Service Fees and charges were raised into the Immigration Revenue Account.

Mr Hulahau says Kimbe makes  significant contributions to the governments revenue through agricultural industries and logging and it is one way we can give back to the province by ensuring foreign owned businesses are compliant.
