Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Commerce and Industry Sam Basil told Parliament yesterday that his department will be presenting a reserved business list for Papua New Guineans to the Prime Minister next month.

Mr Basil made this known yesterday while responding to concerns by Moresby Northeast MP John Kaupa over foreign business’ dominance in small business spaces like tucker boxes and kai bars.

Mr Kaupa said he was concerned over foreign owned businesses cropping up in 8-Mile, 9-Mile and 6-Mile suburbs, undermining citizens undergoing SME training to open their business.

Mr Basil said: “We are working closely with the first legislative council and bring the amendment soon.”He said it was important that the government considers the repercussions after announcing the reserved lists such as; the timeframe to cease operations ‘whether 12 months or 24 months’ and what happens when Papua New Guineans aren’t ready to take over the transition.

But he gave his assurance to Parliament that the list will be handed over to the prime minister next month to be announced
